Lacrosse Drops A Tough 13-9 Decision To Iona

HAMPTON, Va. (Feb. 9, 2025) … AJ Knox scored four goals for Hampton on Sunday afternoon but it was not enough as visiting Iona came away with a 13-9 men's lacrosse victory at Armstrong Stadium.

Iona (1-2) scored 52 seconds into the match as Cullen Lawry caught a feed from Kyle Hardie and scored to put the Gaels ahead. Hampton (0-2) responded behind Mamadou Meite's blast at the 13:16 mark to even the contest.

The Gaels scored five of the next six goals as Darius Stanley broke the run with a goal at the 4:31 mark as Hampton trailed 4-2. Lawry added two in that burst for Iona as they took to a 6-2 lead at the 13:16 mark of the second quarter behind a Jack Martinez tally.

Hampton answered with three of the next four goals as David Jackson and Elijah Jean-Jacques teamed up for the first goal, Jean-Jacques found the back of the net at 4:34 of the opening half and Knox hit his first tally with a feed from Taylor Whitt to trail 7-5 with 2:19 left.

Iona used a Kolbe Curtin goal with 14 seconds left to take an 8-5 lead into halftime. Hampton trailed 9-7 with 4:04 left in the third as Knox rang the back of the net for his third score.

The Gaels responded with four straight goals to lead 13-7 as Jimmy Kennedy was on the receiving end of Kolbe Curtin feed with 6:59 left. Hampton scored twice with Knox from West at 4:22 and Reed Shaw scored his first one of the year with 25 seconds left.

Jean-Jacques, Meite, Shaw, Stanley and Jackson had a goal apiece for Hampton. Stanley had two assists, while Jean-Jacques, Whitt and West had one assist each.
Hampton now heads to Lexington, Virginia to face VMI on February 18 at 6 p.m.
