Pirates Host UNCW in Hampton’s Fifth National Televised Game

HAMPTON, Va. (Feb. 19, 2025) … Hampton University men's basketball team hosts the UNCW Seahawks who are in second place in the Coastal Athletic Association standings. Saturday's contest will be the Pirate's fifth nationally televised contest of the season. Head Coach Ivan Thomas is one win away from being tied for third in the program's history for wins in a coach's first year at the helm.  

ABOUT THE SERIES

Hampton has never defeated UNCW in school history. The most recent meeting between the two teams took place at Trask Coliseum. The Seahawks won on their homecourt 83-62. HU struggled to shoot from beyond the arc going 3-for-18 from three. Noah Farrakhan led the Pirates in scoring with 15 points off the bench.  

ABOUT HAMPTON

Coach Thomas's side enters the contest on a three-game winning streak. In its last time out Hampton defeated Hofstra 67-49. For the Pirates, it was their largest margin of victory over against a conference foe since joining the CAA. HU jumped out to a 35-16 lead at the half holding the Pride to 23 percent shooting from the field. Wayne Bristol Jr. led HU in scoring with a game-high 16 points. The Upper Marlboro, Md. native, was on fire from beyond the arc going 4-for-5 from the three. 

Throughout the season the Pirates have received production off the bench. Hampton is averaging 37.2 bench points per game which is the second most in the country. In 16 of the 27 games played this season, HU's leading scorer has come off the bench. George Beale Jr. has been an effective shooter for the Pirates this season. Beale Jr. sits 12th in the conference for made field goals (129). The Suffolk, Va. native, has hit this mark at an efficient rate shooting 43.9 percent from the field. 

ABOUT UNCW

Similarly to Hampton, UNCW's Thursday night contest was postponed due to the weather. The Seahawks are coached by Takayo Siddle who is in his fifth season with the program. Coach Siddle's side has recorded 20-plus wins in the past three campaigns. In its last time out, UNCW fell at home to Elon 81-70. Sean Moore led the Seahawks in scoring with 28 points. 

Coach Siddle's side has been effective at getting to the free-throw line. The Seahawks are attempting 22.5 free throws which is 33rd most in the country. UNCW is converting these opportunities at the charity stripe at a high rate making 16.4 per contest. The Seahawks have had one of the best offenses in the conference. UNCW is producing 80 points per game ranking them first in the CAA. Coach Siddle's squad is outscoring opponents by 9.6 points.
