Pirates End Three Game Road Stint With a Loss to UNCW, 83-62

WILLMINGTON, N.C. (Jan. 25, 2025) … Hampton University men's basketball team concluded its three-game road stint with an 83-62 loss to UNCW. While the Seahawks started out slow from beyond the arc, UNCW shot 66 percent from three. The Pirates shot a strong 44 percent from the field but struggled from deep going 3-for-18 from three.

The Pirates got on the board first with a jumper by Daniel Johnson from the left side. Both teams struggled to take care of the ball in the first minutes of the game committing three turnovers a piece. With the early turnover, both the Seahawks and the Pirates were able to get out in transition. Heading into the first media timeout, Hampton trailed UNCW 7-5. All five of HU's points were scored off turnovers.

Before the game reached the 10-minute mark, there was a total of five ties and three lead changes. While the Pirates started to commit fewer turnovers, the Seahawks still were able to push the tempo. Hampton would have the advantage on the offensive glass. Coach Ivan Thomas's side grabbed nine offensive rebounds in the first half. The Pirates were able to convert the nine offensive boards to 11 second-chance points.

Coming out of the under-12 media timeout, the Pirates tied the contest back up 15-15 with a layup from Trevor Smith. UNCW produced a 13-2 run to take its first double-digit advantage of the game. The Pirates struggled from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes. Hampton did not make its first three until the closing minute of the half. Noah Farrakhan ended the Pirate's cold stretch from beyond the arc. Farrakhan finished the first frame with 10 points on 4-for-6 shooting from the field. UNCW entered the half with an advantage of 39-28.

Early on in the second frame, the Pirates and Seahawks traded blows. Throughout the first eight minutes, Hampton was able to shrink UNCW's lead down to seven. Johnson along with Kyrese Mullen and Wayne Bristol Jr. provided spark on the offensive end for HU. While the Seahawks were 1-for-4 from the beyond-the-arc in the first half, UNCW was shooting 80 percent from three before the under-eight media timeout.

The Seahawks out of the media timeout produced an 8-1 run to take their largest lead of the night 50-67. However, the Pirates responded with a dominant stretch of their own bringing the contest back to within 10. With UNCW continuing to shoot the ball well from beyond the arc, the Seahawks entered the final media up 72-59.

The Pirates continued to shoot well from the field and nearly shot 50 percent from the field in the second half. Throughout the closing moments of the contest, UNCW's shooting remained consistent. With Hampton missing free throws down the stretch, Seahawk's advantage grew to 21 points before the final horn.

Hampton returns to action inside the convocation Center on Thursday, Jan. 30 against Northeastern. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. and will be streamed on FloSports.
