Campbell Downs Lady Pirates 72-42

BUIES CREEK, N.C. (Jan. 10, 2025) … Campbell (8-7, 1-2) snapped a two-game losing streak with a 72-42 victory over Hampton (4-11, 0-4) on Sunday afternoon. The Camels raced to a 20-4 lead in the first quarter en route to the win.

Hampton coach Tamisha Augustin inserted Malaka Cobb and Tyra Kennedy into the starting line-up at the two guard slots. It was the first start of the season for both players. The move paid immediate dividends as Kennedy scored Hampton's first basket.

But fast-breaking Campbell scored 11 of the game's first 13 points to go ahead 11-2 midway through the first quarter. The lead grew to 20-4 with 2:02 left. Hampton shuffled the line-up, substituted freely, and employed a full-court press in an attempt to slow down the Camels. The Lady Pirates scored four of the final six points of the opening quarter as Campbell led 22-8.

Casey Miller and CeCe Thomas came off the bench to spark the Lady Pirates in the second quarter. Hampton rallied, scoring six straight points to close the gap to 29-18. Campbell was able to hold Hampton's Jasha Clinton, the Coastal Athletic Association's second-leading scorer, to just one point in the first half.

The first half ended with the Camels ahead, 37-20, their biggest lead of the game at that point. Thomas led the way for the Lady Pirates with six first half points with Miller adding five. Eight Camels scored in the opening half led by Gemma Nunez with nine.

Following a Campbell lay-up to open the second half, Clinton scored her first field goal on a jumper 39-22 with 9:22 left. A Le'Asia Foreman basket in the paint and a bucket and free throw by Clinton cut the deficit to 19 midway through the third quarter. Clinton's steal and lay-up closed the gap. Campbell outscored Hampton 10-2 to end the third quarter to put the Camels ahead 58-31. Clinton had seven of Hampton's 11 points in the quarter.

Kennedy's three-pointer in the first minute of the fourth quarter, Hampton's first trey in two games, made it 60-34. Tiani Abrams would later connect on a three-pointer for the Lady Pirates. But Hampton was limited to just one field goal in the game's final 4:31 as the Camels posted a 72-42 win.

Miller had a career-high 11 rebounds and Clinton finished with seven points. Clinton was Hampton's leading scorer with nine. Ten players scored for Campbell led by Ciara Alexander with 16. Gianni Boone (11) also scored double figures. Hampton shot 31.4 percent and Campbell was 46.0 percent from the field. The Camels scored 44 points in the paint and had 25 points off turnovers. Hampton's bench chipped in 22 of the team's 42 points.

Hampton begins a four-game homestand on Friday, Jan. 17 when the Lady Pirates host Delaware at 7:00 p.m. at the Hampton Convocation Center.
