Late Goal Lifts Delaware Over the Lady Pirates, 1-0

NORFOLK, Va. (Sept. 26, 2024) … The Lady Pirates fell to the Blue Hens of Delaware 1-0 at Powhatan Field. Hampton's defensive style of play was able to hold UD's offense in check for most of the contest, However, Delaware was able to score the game-winning goal late in the match.

Early on the Lady Pirates produced a quick shot in the opening minutes. Hampton's Mattie Edozie fired off a shot from inside the penalty box on the counterattack. Delaware's goalkeeper would save Edozie's chance. While HU used a defensive style of play, the Lady Pirates created another opportunity to score in the 18th minute. With Hampton being offside, the attack was halted.

Coach Scot Vorlwold's side allowed nine shots in the first half. The Lady Pirates' backline anchored by Taylor Lewis-Richardson, Keri Geter, Evan-Nichole Whitaker, and Cristina Boluda Piqueras held the Blue Hens to three shots on goal. The backline was also able to block two shots in front of the net.

Freshman Avery John got the start in goal for Hampton. The Rosenfield, Germany native, made three saves in the first half and finished the match with six. In her fourth career start, John needed one more save to tie her career high.

Coming out of the half, Hampton's defense stood strong keeping the score at 0-0. While the Lady Pirates allowed 14 shots in the final 45 minutes, HU's defense continued to block shots. Coach Vorwold's backline blocked four more shots in the second half.

Delaware's Constanze Viehmann found the back of the net in the 74th minute. In the closing moments of the match, Hampton continued to battle. Edozie once again fired a shot from inside the Blue Hens penalty box from a corner kick. The header from the Woodbridge, Va. native, just missed the top of the crossbar. The Lady Pirates ran out of time to score the equalizing goal.
