Lady Pirates Drop Conference Road Match to the Elon Phoenix

ELON, N.C. (Sept. 29, 2024) … Hampton University women's soccer team fell on the road to the Elon Phoenix 6-0. Elon was able take control early on in the match scoring twice in the first 10 minutes. The Lady Pirates produced four shots and could not register one on net. 

Through the first five minutes of the match, Hampton (3-8-1) and Elon (8-0-1) did not record a single shot. Both Mattie Edozie and Zaria Ascue picked up a foul early moments. Patricia Wharton made her first start in goal for HU. The Smyrna, Ga. native, recorded five saves this afternoon. 

Elon's Kennedy Jones found the back of the net in the eighth minute. The Phoenix quickly struck again making it 2-0. Freshman Ellen Van Caenegem produced the Lady Pirates' first shot of the match.  The Forney, Texas native, just missed the top of the goal. Van Caenegem finished the contents with a team-high two shots. 

Before the end of the half, the Phoenix found the back of the net once more increasing their advantage. In the closing moments, Hampton made substitutions bringing in Sanaa Perry, Lara Bunse, and Sofia Jimenez. Perry did record a shot in her first few minutes of action. 

Coming out the half, the Phoenix scored again making it 4-0. Elon scored twice in the second half with the last goal coming at the 73rd minute. Before the end of the match, Hampton's Taryn Goodwin recorded a shot. Goodwin's chance was off target just missing the crossbar. 

Up next, Hampton returns home to Powhatan Field to host UNCW on Thursday, Oct. 3. Kickoff for the Lady Pirates next match is tabbed for noon.
