Hampton Falls to Drexel 6-2 in the Series Opening Contest

HAMPTON, Va. (April 12, 2024) … The Lady Pirates began the three-game series against Drexel with a 6-2 loss. While Hampton jumped out to an early lead in the first frame, the Dragons produced a strong fourth inning to take control of the contest. Coach Monique White's squad recorded seven hits this afternoon but committed two errors. DU's bullpen would have a solid outing recording seven strikeouts.

After Drexel's bats were held silent in the top of the first, HU got on the board in the bottom half of the frame. Aitirhna Aiken reached first on a walk giving Hampton an early baserunner. With the Dragons committing an error during the next at-bat, the Lady Pirates had their first runner in scoring position. Brooke Williams brought Aiken in on a single to the outfield making it 1-0.

During the third inning, Drexel found a way to tie up the contest. Hampton would get two quick outs even though the Dragons had a base hit knock. A triple to left field brought in the tying run for DU. Drexel's bats continued to produce in the fourth frame tallying almost half of their total hits. After the Lady Pirates got the first out of the stanza, a solo home run gave DU a one-run advantage. The Dragons continued to due damage by tallying three extra-base hits. Before the end of the inning, DU had a three-run lead 4-1.

Hampton would start to dig into Drexel's advantage during the fourth. With two outs on the board, Taylor Ivey recorded her first hit of the contest. The Bowie, Md. native, was able to advance to third on a throwing error made by the Dragons. Kylee Quinn's single up the middle made it a two-run contest.

Drexel in the final two innings brought in two more runs. The Dragons in the top of the sixth got on the board with a solo home run to center field. In the final frame, DU regained its four-run advantage on a steal attempt.  Hampton began the bottom half of the stanza with Quinn's second hit of the game. However, the Dragons would record three consecutive outs to end the contest.

Hampton returns to action tomorrow at the Lady Pirates Softball Stadium. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. and Saturday's game will also be Community Day. The Lady Pirates first-ever Community Day will begin at 11:30 a.m.
