Lady Pirates 11 Hits Lift Hampton, Past the Dragons, 7-6

HAMPTON, Va. (April 13, 2024) … Hampton University softball team took game two from the Drexel Dragons 7-6 evening the three-game series. For the sixth time this season, the Lady Pirates recorded 10 or more hits in a contest. HU's bats were able to produce early and often jumping out to a five-run lead. Drexel in the final three innings scored six runs, but Coach Monique White's squad held on to the win.

The Dragons threatened to score early with runners on second and third. With back-to-back groundouts, Hampton got out of the jam. In the bottom half of the frame, HU scored the contest's first run. Carmynn Bonner gave the Lady Pirates a spark with a leadoff single to center field. While Drexel got the next two batters out, Bonner was able to advance to third. Brooke Williams during the next at-bat drove her in a base knock to the outfield.

In the bottom of the second Hampton scored three runs on only one hits. With two walks and an error by the Dragons, the basses would be loaded. Emily Kepple on a double deep to right field cleared the basses making it 4-0. In the third frame, Hampton's bats continued to produce scoring once more.

Drexel started to dig into the Lady Pirates' advantage at the top of the fifth. The Dragons began the stanza with a base knock up the middle. With the runner advancing, DU brought the runner in on another single up the middle. Hampton was able to get out of the inning with a great defensive effort from Leah Maduro. The Freshman caught a line drive and tagged the bag for the double play.

Emily Workman got the start for Hampton and pitched five innings. Workman only gave up three hits and one run. Her efforts on the mound led to her third win of the 2024 campaign.

Hampton made up the run given up in the fifth in the bottom half of the frame. Taylor Ivey gave the Lady Pirates a spark with a leadoff single. The bases would be loaded for Coach Monique White's squad with another base knock and a walk. With her first hit of the afternoon, Aitirhna Aiken scored two runs on a double to center field.

Heading into the final inning, the Lady Pirates had a six-run advantage. The Dragons started to mount a comeback with a three-run homer to right field. With runners on first and second, Drexel brought in two more runs on a double to the outfield. However, Hampton picked up the final out to end the contest.
