Lady Pirates End 11-Game Home Stretch Against Quinnipiac

HAMPTON, Va. (March 12, 2024) … Hampton University softball team closes out an 11-game home stretch tomorrow in a doubleheader against Quinnipiac. The Lady Pirates are 2-1 all-time against the Bobcats. Wednesday's doubleheader is set to begin at noon. HU will continue Coastal Athletic Association play this weekend versus Monmouth.

A Look at the Pirates

Hampton in its last time out fell to UNCW in both games of the doubleheader. The Seahawks took both games by a score of 5-0. HU's bats were silent throughout both contests being held to only three hits. While Emily Workman was credited with the loss on Sunday, she had a solid outing against UNCW. Through the five innings, Workman only gave up a hit and produced two strikeouts. 

While the Lady Pirates are still searching for their first home run of the season, Hampton still has had success recording extra-base hits. HU ranks third in the CAA for triples per game averaging 0.14 per contest. Coach Monique White's squad also sits third in the conference for triples (4).  Hampton has been able to use its speed as an advantage producing 21 stolen bases on 24 attempts.

A Look at the Bobcats

Quinnipiac enters Wednesday's contest with a 7-3 overall record. The Bobcats have not started conference play and were selected to finish ninth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. QU is coached by Hillary Smith who enters her sixth season with the program. Prior to Quinnipiac Smith was an assistant coach at Florida International. While at FIU the program would win over 76 games in two seasons and make the NCAA Tournament. 

The Bobcats this season have been led by sophomore catcher Kennedy Demott. Through ten games, Demott has the highest batting average on coach Smith's squad in batting average with a .471. The Murietta, Calif. native, ranks third in the MAAC for batting average. Junior Amanda Engel is another solid bat in the Quinnipiac lineup. While Engel only has nine hits during the 2024 campaign, she has the ninth-best batting average in their conference (.400).
