Pirates Back at Home to Host Bellarmine

HAMPTON, Va. (Feb. 26, 2024) – The Hampton Pirates are preparing to host the Bellarmine Knights tomorrow at 3:00 PM inside Armstrong Stadium.

The Pirates are coming off a 14-7 loss to the Queens (N.C.) Royals. Hampton not only allowed their fewest goals in a game (14) but also scored seven times, which is the most in a game all season. Darius Stanley tied his career-high in goals for one game with a hat trick. Xavier Salley netted two goals and Miles Fawcett and DyJae Pearson earned the other two.

So Far This Season

Darius Stanley is Hampton's leading goal scorer this season at five tallies. In 2024, nine different Pirates have scored and six have at least two goals. Throughout the first four games, Hampton has recorded a total of 20 goals and assists have been dished out on half of them.

On the defensive side of the ball, Hampton's goalie has saved 55 shots. Dillon Bethea has caused the most turnovers (six), and more than 10 percent of the squad's ground balls at 14.

Scouting the Bellarmine Knights (1-3)

Andrew Whitley is coaching the Knights in his fifth year with the program. Last year, the Knights broke 33 program records, including the number of NCAA Division I wins in one season (last year's record 11-6). In Bellarmine's last two seasons, they have made appearances in the ASUN Tournament, and last year defeated Mercer 14-13 in the quarterfinal round. This season, they have beat St. Bonaventure and suffered losses at Duke and Ohio State. Their most recent defeat came at home to Canisius in an 8-7 thriller.

John Alie leads the Knights in goals (10) and assists (five) this season. Bellarmines goalie, JC Higginbotham, has made 49 saves. Denton Macdonald has recorded the most caused turnonvers and ground balls with seven and 12 respectively.
Hampton and Bellarmine have played twice, with the Knights leading the series 2-0. Both games took place in Louisville, Ky.
