Hampton’s Second Half Push Falls Short to Northeastern

BOSTON, Mass. (Feb. 24, 2024) … Hampton men's Basketball team fell on the road to Northeastern 70-62. The Pirates were down by as many as 26 points in the second half. With HU hitting shots in the final 10 minutes and playing great defense, Coach Edward Joyner Jr.'s squad made it a six-point game. However, Hampton would run out of time to complete the comeback.

Tedrick Wilcox Jr. got the Pirates going early with a slam. Northeastern was quick to respond scoring 10 consecutive points to break the tie. Before the first media timeout, the Huskies shot 67 percent from the field. While Hampton trailed by 10 early, HU found a way to cut the deficit. 

Northeastern's Chris Doherty got off to a strong start scoring 11 points in the first eight minutes of the contest. Hampton defended the three well holding the Huskies to 12.5 percent shooting. NU early on did most of its damage from inside the arc. Wilcox Jr. provided the Pirates with scoring throughout the first half. In the first 20 minutes alone the Pawtucket, R.I. native had 12 points. 

In the waning minutes of the opening half, the Huskies jumped out to their largest lead of the half  36-17. Northeastern continued to do its damage from inside the paint. While Hampton started to hit shots in the final minutes, NU entered the half-up by 18.

Coming out of the half, Hampton was able to bring it back to within 15 points. The Pirates were able to get out in transition and attack the paint. The Huskies would follow up HU's strong start with a 14-3 run. Northeastern continued to score inside the paint. NU finished the contest with 36 points in the paint amounting to 51 percent of their total scoring.

At the 8:39 mark, junior guard Jordan Nesbitt scored his 1,000th career point. Coach Edward Joyner Jr.'s squad late in the second half continued to battle. A three-point jumper by Tristan Maxwell made it a 14-point game with less than six minutes to go. While the Huskies jumped back out to a 17-point advantage 65-48. Hampton closed out the contest on a 14-3 run. HU was able to dominate during this stretch with Ja'Von Benson Producing on both ends. Benson finished the contest with a double-double scoring 18 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. With only 30 seconds remaining the Pirates would run out of time.

Hampton returns to action Thursday at 7:00 PM inside the Convocation Center taking on the Monmouth Hawks. Thursday's game will also be senior day for the Pirates.
