The Pirates Fall 59-58 to North Carolina A&T at the Wire

GREENSBORO, N.C. (Feb. 1, 2024) … Hampton University men's basketball team fell to the Aggies of North Carolina A&T 59-58. After the Pirates had a sluggish first half offensively, HU shot 51.9 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes. With a strong second half from Kyrese Mullen, Hampton kept it within a few possessions. The Pirates had an opportunity to at the buzzer but the shot was no good.

Both teams struggled to find their rhythm from the field early on. While North Carolina A&T scored the contest's first points, the Aggies experienced a three-minute scoring drought. Before the first media timeout, the Pirates had not hit a shot from the field. Their only points in the first four minutes came from free throws. However, HU only trailed by two 4-2 at the first media timeout. 

Joshua Lusane gave the Pirates a spark off the bench after the timeout. With Coach Edward Joyner Jr.'s squad continuing to play solid defense, Hampton was able to produce a 12-2 run. Throughout the stretch, HU did their damage inside the paint and at the free throw line. With 6:09 remaining in the half, the Pirates had their largest advantage of the game 19-12. 

The Aggies closed out the half strong answering on a 13-4 run. In the final four minutes of the first half, North Carolina A&T started to hit shots from beyond the arc. While A&T only hit two threes in the first 20 minutes, both came in the closing minutes of the half. Hampton was able to enter the half tied 25-25 with a dunk by Tedrick Wilcox Jr. with seconds remaining.

To begin the second half, the Aggies produced a 10-0 run. In the opening minutes, A&T's offense exploded shooting 66.7 percent from the field. Kyrese Mullen after a quiet first half energized the Pirate's offense. In the second half alone the Norfolk, Va. native scored 15 points. Mullen finished the contest with 18 points and 8 rebounds. 

With 10:50 remaining in the game the Pirates tied it up 43-43. With Coach Joyner Jr.'s squad finding high-quality looks inside the paint, they were able to keep the game within two possessions. North Carolina A&T before the final media timeout hit a three to go up by five. However, the Pirate's defense did not allow the Aggies to score for the remainder of the contest. With Mullen making back-to-back layups HU only trailed by one with less than a minute to go. Hampton's defense was able to stop N.C. A&T once again. With time expiring the Pirates attempted a shot from beyond the arc, but it was no good.

Hampton returns to action on Saturday at the Invesco QQQ Legacy Classic. HU will take on Howard at 4:00 PM inside the Prudential Center.
