Pirates Capture First Win at Cayman Islands Classic Defeating Duquesne, 64-59

GRAND CAYMAN, Cayman Islands (Nov. 25, 2024) … Coach Ivan Thomas's squad captured their first win of the Cayman Islands Classic, defeating Duquesne 64-59. While the Pirates trailed at the end of the first half, Hampton closed out the contest on a 17-4 run. Daniel Johnson and Noah Farrakhan hit shots down the stretch for the Pirates.  While the Dukes shot over 50 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes, Hampton held Duquesne to 34.6 percent shooting from the floor in the final half.

The Pirates were able to throw the first punch with Xzaiver Long making a layup from inside the paint. Once again, Farrakhan got going early for Hampton scoring his first basket of the afternoon at the 17:24 mark. The Newark, N.J. native, finished the first half with 13 points. Heading into the first stoppage of play HU had the advantage 6-3.

While a pair of three throws by Long kept the Pirates led to a couple of possessions, the Dukes took their first lead of the night with 13:03 left in the half. However, a shot from beyond the arc by Farrakhan quickly regained the advantage for Hampton. With both sides trading blows, neither team could take control of the first 20 minutes. In the first half alone, there was a total of nine lead changes.

Hampton entered the final two minutes of the half with a slight edge over the Dukes 28-26. With the Pirates missing shots and committing turnovers, Duquesne produced a 6-0 run to close out the frame. The Dukes Jakub Necas and Jahsean Corbett provided the spark for the strong finish to the half.

Hampton quickly in the final 20 minutes, made it a one-possession game.  With Duquesne picking up crucial defensive stops, the Dukes were able to hold onto a slight advantage. Farrakhan continued to provide offense for the Pirates throughout the second half. George Beale Jr. started to find his rhythm towards the end of the contest. Beale Jr. hit back-to-back jumpers making it a one-point game once more.

Duquesne would go on to take its largest lead of the game, 55-47 with less than six minutes remaining. Hampton erased the Duke's Margin by producing a 17-4 run. During the Pirate's stretch of dominance, Johnson and Farrakhan came up clutch for HU hitting key shots to propel Coach Thomas's side to the 64-59 victory.

Farrakhan finished the contest with a game-high 24 points while going 9-for-18 from the field. While the Pirates were out-rebounded 34-32, Hampton shot 81.8 percent from the charity stripe.

Hampton men's basketball returns to action on Nov. 26 at 1:30 p.m. The Pirates will face the winner of High Point and Old Dominion. Tuesday's game will be streamed on FloSports.
