Lady Pirates Begin Campbell Series With a Close 3-2 Loss

HAMPTON, Va. (Oct. 24, 2024) … The Hampton University volleyball team began the two-game series with Campbell in a five-set loss 3-2. While HU took the first stanza 25-23, the Camels won the next two sets. The fourth frame went down to the wire with the Lady Pirates taking the stanza late. In the match-winning set it was tied 15-15 but Campbell took the last three points winning the contest. 

During the first set, both teams traded blows early on with the frame being on three separate occasions before either side reached 10 points. A 6-2 run by the Lady Pirates gave Hampton the advantage 14-10. Kills by Madison Clark, Sachia Lamb, and Ada Bulger helped spark the HU's run. While Campbell took the lead at the 15-13 mark, Hampton persevered and eventually regained its four-point lead. After a service error by the Camels, it would be set point. Campbell brought the set back to within one, Clark put the set away for Hampton. The senior from Hampton, Va. tallied four kills in the first frame. 

Hampton continued to have success early in the second stanza jumping out to a 5-1 lead. Campbell brought it back to within one tallying three consecutive points. However, with kills by Maria Clara De Andrade and Ida Wiszomirska the Lady Pirates held on to its early advantage. From the 8-7 mark on the Camels led the rest of the frame. While Hampton cut down Campbell's lead to within a point, CU prevailed taking the second set 25-18

Once again Hampton and Campbell battled it out in the early moments of the third stanza. The set was tied eight on eight separate occasions before either side recorded 10 points. CU started to take control at the 13-13 mark. Four consecutive points by the Camles made it 16-13. During this stretch, Campbell's Maddie Lambers produced two kills. Lambers finished the match with nine kills. The Camels won the last eight points to take the third frame 25-14.

In the fourth set, the Lady Pirates tied the match at 2-2. Early on Hampton jumped out to a 9-5 advantage. While the Camels brought it back to within a couple of points, Campbell did not take the lead until the 18-17 mark. Neither side could take control of the stanza until the very end of the frame. Hampton won five of the last seven points claiming the fourth set 31-29.

HU started off strong in the final frame winning the first five points. Campbell would answer the Lady Pirates' hot start eventually gaining an advantage 7-6. With Lyrique Alteus and Clark producing kills, Hampton found themselves back on top 11-9. Freshman Ida Wiszomirska throughout the match set up her teammates. Wiszomirska finished the contest with a career-high 31 assists. After the Lady Pirates took the lead 15-14, Campbell tallied three consecutive points to win the match. 

Hampton continues the series with Campbell on Friday, Oct. 25th. The match is set to begin at 6:00 p.m. and will be streamed at 6:00 p.m.
