Pirates Fall to Campbell Inside the Convocation Center 80-69

HAMPTON, Va. (Jan. 6th, 2023) … Hampton Men's basketball team started their three-game home stretch with an 80-69 loss to Camels of Campbell. The Pirates had a double-digit lead in the first half shooting 51.7 percent from the field. In the second half, HU's offense lost its stride and Campbell came out firing on all cylinders. Hampton would commit 20 turnovers which was their highest as a team since facing San Jose State in the Paradise Jam.

Tedrick Wilcox Jr. got Coach Edward Joyner Jr.'s squad going in the early minutes of the contest. Wilcox Jr. produced the Pirate's first five points. Throughout the first half, Pawtucket, R.I. native couldn't miss going 6-8 from the field. With the Camel's slower pace, it would be tied 5-5 at the first media timeout.

Both sides continued to trade blows answering any advancement made by their opponent. A three-point jumper by Jerry Deng swung the momentum in favor of HU making it 15-11. Deng finished the contest with 11 points while producing three shots from beyond the arc. The Pirates would go on a 12-2 run giving them an eight-point advantage. With Hampton hitting six threes in the first half, they held onto their lead for most of the half.

Coming out of the under-five media timeout the Camels offense started to find its rhythm. With back-back threes and a layup by Anthony Dell'Orso CU found a way to tie it up 37-37. HU's Tedrick Wilcox Jr. hit another with less than a minute to go to put HU up by three at the half. Wilcox Jr. finished the contest with 18 points which would be his highest output since the win over Florida Gulf Coast.

To start the second half Campbell was able to capitalize on HU's turnovers. The Camels quickly found themselves with the lead at the 17:46 mark. For most of the half, Hampton was able to keep it within striking distance. However, after the Pirates brought it back within four CU's offense caught fire. Campbell in a span of six minutes produced a 15-0 run to take a 19-point advantage late in the contest.

While Hampton's offense started to make shots down the stretch there was not enough time left on the clock. Kyerese Mullen finished the contest ninth double-double of the season. In six out of the last eight games, Mullen has produced a double-double.

The Pirates return to action on Thursday against William & Mary inside the Convocation Center at 7:00 PM. Thursday night's contest will mark the 22nd meeting between Hampton and the Tribe.
