Lady Pirates Fall to St. Peter’s 69-58

HAMPTON, Va. (Dec. 21, 2023) … Hampton (0-10) used a smothering press to build a 35-20 halftime lead only to see St. Peter's (4-7) turn the tables in the second half and employ a full-court press and pull a come-from-behind 69-58 victory over the Lady Pirates.

Hampton pulled ahead, 15-12, after the first quarter. It marked the first time this season, the Lady Pirates led after the first period. Coach David Six's team used a 12-1 run at the end of the second quarter to lead, 35-20, at halftime. Hampton's defense held the Peacock's to just one field goal in the final 6:41 of the half and the Lady Pirates scored 18 points off turnovers in the first half.

But St. Peter's opened the second half with a full-court press and scored 11 straight points to close the gap to 35-31 with 5:58 to go in the third period. After St. Peter's tied the score, Tyra Kennedy canned a three-pointer to give Hampton a 38-35 advantage. A Casey Miller field goal with :25 left in the quarter cut the Hampton deficit to 42-41 after three quarters.

With the score tied, 49-49, with 6:18 to go in the contest, St. Peter's went on a 20-9 to pull away in the game's final minutes. A basket by Carys Roy and back-to-back treys by Rachel Kuhl gave the Peacocks a 57-49 advantage. A free throw by Hampton's Le'Asia Foreman with 2:02 closed the gap to 61-56 but the Lady Pirates could get no closer. After shooting 46.1 percent from the field in the opening half, the Lady Pirates shot 29.0 percent in the second half. St. Peter's scored 24 points off 17 second half turnover by the Lady Pirates.

Janae Dublin led the Pirates with 12 points. Jada Leonard was the game-high scorer with 25 points for the Peacocks. Mikia Keither added 18 and Kuhl scored 15 for St. Peter's.

Hampton returns to action on Jan. 5 when the Lady Pirates open CAA play at Drexel in a 6:00 p.m. tip-off.
