Pirates Second Half Comeback Against Eastern Michigan Falls Short

YPSILANTI, Mich. (Dec. 21, 2023) … Hampton University men's basketball team narrowly fell to Eagles of Eastern Michigan 72-69. After scoring the contest's first points, the Pirates would trail the rest of the game. While HU outrebounded EMU 39-35, the Eagles 50 percent shooting from three helped them maintain their advantage through the remainder of the contest.

Ja'Von Benson provided Hampton's first points of the contest with a jumper outside the paint. However, the Pirates went on a five-minute scoring drought. HU's defense stepped up during this stretch holding the Eagles to just six points. With a pair of free throws from Kyrese Mullen Hampton tied it up 6-6 with 13:35 remaining.

Eastern Michigan's offense caught on fire during the final ten minutes of the half. In the first 20 minutes of the game, EMU shot 50 percent from the field and beyond the arc. One of the top guards in the country, Tyson Acuff produced nine points down the stretch. In the first half alone. Acuff had 17 points for the Eagles.

While HU was trailing by 19 points with five minutes to go, they entered the half only down by 12. Trey Thomas hit three threes down during the final minutes of the first half. In his third game back the sophomore had a career-high 17 points.

Coming out of the half, Eastern Michigan continued to hold onto a double-digit advantage. Before the final media timeout the Pirates found a way to make it a seven-point contest. Throughout the second half, Kyrese Mullen and Trey Thomas were key contributors for Hampton. In the final 20 minutes, Mullen had 11 points and seven rebounds. The Norfolk, Va. native, finished the game with 19 points and 14 rebounds earning his seventh double-double of the season.

After a three in the final minute by Mullen, HU only trailed by three. Hampton's defense once again answered the call and got a stop. With 11 seconds left, the Pirates had one more chance to tie it up. While HU only committed eight turnovers, a late one sealed the game

The Pirates return to action on Jan. 1 at noon against Drexel to open up conference play. Hampton's conference opener will be on national television with CBS Sports Network providing the broadcast.
