HAMPTON, VA (Nov. 9, 2023) … Hampton (1-1) made its home debut with a convincing 109-46 victory over Mid-Atlantic Christian (0-2) before 2,210 fans at Hampton's Convocation Center. The game was never in doubt as the Pirates scored the game's first nine points and rolled to a 53-21 halftime advantage. Fans added to the game's festive atmosphere with the wave and their enthusiastic reaction to Hampton's band, The Force, and Pirate cheerleaders.
Hampton's
Kyrese Mullen led the way with career-high points (25), rebounds (18), and assists (4). Tedrick Wilcox and Dan Banister scored 16 points each and
Amir Nesbitt and
Donovan Raymond each tallied 14 points in the game. All 11 players who saw action scored for the Pirates.
Mid-Atlantic Christian was led by Lancelot Maurer, who scored a team-high 12 points in just nine minutes.
Hampton dominated the boards by outrebounding Mid-Atlantic Christian by a 57 to 21 margin. In addition to Mullen's 18 board,
Ja'Von Benson grabbed 11 rebounds for the Pirates. Hampton shot 59.7 percent from the field while holding the Mustangs to 28.4 percent shooting from the field.
Mullen led the way in the first half with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Wilcox and Nesbitt added nine first half points each. The Pirates shot 55 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes.
Hampton scored the first 10 points of the second half to lead 63-21 after a three-pointer by Nesbitt. The lead grew to 50, 77-27, with 12:15 left on a lay-up by Dan Banister with 12:17 to go.
The Pirates broke the 100-point barrier on a three-pointer by
Tyler Chatman to go up, 101-40, with 3:53 remaining.
Hampton returns to action on Nov. 13 when the Pirates play longtime rival Norfolk State at 7:00 p.m. on the road.
