Hampton's Road Warriors Make Stop in Chapel Hill

HAMPTON, Va. (Nov. 13, 2023) ... On Nov. 7, Hampton (0-1) opened the 2023-24 campaign on the road at Providence and on Nov. 15, the Lady Pirates travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. for a game with North Carolina.

But that is only the beginning. Hampton will play eight of its first nine (and 10 of the first 12) games on the road. Following the game with the Tar Heels, the Lady Pirates return home to face longtime rival Norfolk State at the Convocation Center on Nov. 19.

After facing the Lady Spartans at home, Hampton again takes to the road. This time the Lady Pirates travel to play two games in the Long Island University Tournament, to Greenville N.C. (East Carolina), Albuquerque, N.M. (New Mexico), Washington, D.C. (George Washington), and Statesboro, Ga. (Georgia Southern). Hampton's next home game is scheduled for Dec. 21 against St. Peter's in the last contest before the Christmas holidays--- a month and two days between home games.

The Lady Pirates then take to the road to start the new year with road games at Drexel and Delaware in CAA action.

The Lady Pirates will have to tighten their seat belts and be ready to a wild ride. Literally.

The Game

Hampton (0-1) travels to Chapel Hill, N.C. to take on North Carolina (2-0) in a non-conference tilt.

The Lady Pirates opened the 2023-24 season on the road, dropping a 76-46 decision to Providence on Nov. 7.

Depth was a problem as coach David Six's team dressed just 10 players for the game including only four players who saw action for Hampton in 2022-23.

Hampton fell behind 9-0 in the game's first 1:47 and never recovered against the Friars. Bright spots for the Lady Pirates were senior forward Camryn Hill with 20 points and junior guard Amyah Reaves, who tallied 15 points in the game. Aisha Dabo added five points with four rebounds off the bench. Following the game against North Carolina, Hampton returns home to take on longtime rival Norfolk State on Nov. 19. The Lady Pirates play eight of their first nine games on the road. Included in the stretch are games against New Mexico State and Long Island in New York (Long Island Tournament), at East Carolina, at New Mexico, at George Washington and at Georgia Southern.

The next home game following the Norfolk State contest isn't until Dec. 21 when Hampton hosts St. Peter's in the final game before the Christmas holiday break.

North Carolina posted a 22-11 record a year ago and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament under Coach Courtney Banghart.
The veteran North Carolina team returns three starters from last year's team including senior guard Deja Kelly, who averaged 16.5 ppg a year ago. Senior guard/forward Alyssa Ustby averaged 13.2 ppg and senior forward Anya Poole averaged 5.0 ppg and 5.9 rpg.

The Tar Heels opened the 2023-24 season with a pair of wins including a 102-49 victory over Gardner-Webb on Nov. 8 and posted a 74-70 victory over Davidson on Nov. 12.
