FARMVILLE, VA – Hampton narrowly loses on the road to top-seeded Longwood 76-72 Saturday.
Mario Haskett Jr. scores a career-high 21 points (9-14 FG) in 29 minutes off the bench for the Pirates. Russell Dean recorded 16 points and five rebounds.
Najee Garvin scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds.
The Lancers opened the game on an 17-8 scoring run in the first 7:39 of the first half. The Pirates, however, were able to close the first half, leading 35-34 after a back-and-forth affair between the two teams. The Pirates held the Lancers to just 38.7 percent shooting from the field in the first half.
The Pirates fell behind as many as 15 points with less than eight minutes remaining in the game in the second half, but the game was far from over. Hampton slowly chipped away at the deficit and held Longwood to just six points in the final 6:30 of the game. With just 15 seconds to go, following a made layup by Haskett Jr., the Pirates were down 74-72. Longwood would hit a pair of free throws, helping them outlast the comeback effort by Hampton and sealing the win.
The Pirates head home for the final time this season Wednesday, February 23 at 7 p.m. to take on Campbell.
