BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – In a wild second half that saw the teams score at least 55 points apiece, Gardner-Webb pulled away late to defeat Hampton 92-82 on Tuesday in Big South Conference play.
The Lady Pirates had five players score double figures. Forward
Nylah Young led the way with 17 points. Guards
Amyah Reaves (13 points) and
Madison Buford (11 points) and forward
Nas Nigatu (12 points) all had major contributions off the bench. Guard
Dlayla Chakolis also had 10 points to go along with six rebounds.
With neither team being able to gain more than a three-point lead in the opening period, Hampton and Gardner-Webb played to a draw, 15-15 at the end of the first. With both teams trading baskets, neither could find the advantage over the other as the second quarter was underway. However, following a couple made free-throws, Hampton found themselves down 32-27 as the first half ended.
The Lady Pirate offense was clicking, as they scored 55 second half points and shot 50 percent from the field as a team. This was not enough to overcome the Bulldogs who put up 60 points in the second half and 34 in the final quarter, as the Lady Pirates fell behind as many as 21 points in the fourth quarter.
The Lady Pirates are back on the road Thursday, February 3 to take on the USC Upstate Spartans at 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
