Nylah Young scored 21 points and seven rebounds, while
Madison Buford added 17 and seven rebounds as Hampton fell in its season opener to Columbia 78-56 on Tuesday night.
Columbia jumped out to a 20-8 lead after one and pushed the advantage to 41-23 at halftime. In the second half, Hampton cut the lead to 11 points twice in the third quarter with a Young jumper bringing the Lady Pirates to 48-37 with 96 seconds left.
To start the fourth Columbia went on a 10-0 run to put the game out of reach after a pair of Sienna Durr free throws to lead 67-44 with just under seven minutes left.
Alayna Townsell just missed joining the double figure group with nine points for Hampton who now heads to Delaware State for a Thursday night tip.
