HAMPTON, Va. – A 28-6 start to the game provided Hampton a comfortable margin as they withstood a Charleston Southern comeback to win 66-57 on Senior Day.
After giving up a jumper to Carmella Walker in the first 18 seconds, Hampton (17-10, 13-5) would score 20 straight points as they were 8-for-10 from the floor as a 3-ball by
MaKayla Timmons put Hampton up 20-2 with 4:54 left in the quarter. The advantage grew to 28-6 on a steal and layup by
Laren VanArsdale with 3:13 remaining. In the opening quarter, Hampton was 6-for-7 from 3-point range (85.7%).
Charleston Southern chopped a 14-point advantage late in the second quarter in half scoring the last seven points over the final three minutes to trail 39-32 on a pair of Kelsie Ruff-Mills free throws with 42 seconds remaining.
In the third quarter, Hampton hit its first shot as a layup by
Nylah Young put them up 41-32 just 11 seconds into the quarter. That was the last field goal Hampton hit in the third quarter, missing its last 15 shots. The Lady Pirates were saved by going 14-of-15 from the foul line to lead 55-46 on a pair of VanArsdale free throws with three seconds left. That got Hampton back on track as they opened the fourth on an 8-2 spurt to lead 63-48 on a VanArsdale layup with 7:22 left.
Timmons and VanArsdale were the leading scorers with 14 points apiece, while Young had her tenth double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds and Bates added 10 points, six assists and three steals.
Carmen Jackson just missed joining them in double figures scoring a career-high nine points
Hampton starts a crucial last week of the regular season on Wednesday night visiting league leading Campbell.
