SOFTBALL SPLITS DAY ONE OF HAMPTON CLASSIC

HAMPTON, Va. – The first day of the Hampton Classic saw the host Lady Pirates split a pair of games defeating Delaware State 6-4 and losing to Marshall 12-3.

In the opener, a pair of solo home runs from Brianna Anderson and Lexi Lomax provided the final margin in the 6-4 win over Delaware State.  Hampton (8-3) scored a run in the first as with one out Kiaya Jeusi singled up the middle moving Skylar Chaves to third who had reached on a fielder's choice.  Chavez scored on a single by Janae Lyles.

The Hornets responded with one in the top of the third, but Hampton responded with two runs as Jackie Gonzalez reached on an error and went to second on a single by Chavez.  Tiera Washington followed with a double to center to score Gonzalez.  Jeusi drove in another on a sacrifice fly to lead 3-1.

Delaware State tied the game with two in the top of the fourth, but Hampton took the lead again with a run in the fifth as with one out Chavez beat out an infield single and went to third on a single by Washington.  An errant throw allowed Chavez to score for a 4-3 lead.

Once again, Delaware State tied the game with a run in the top of the sixth, but home runs by Anderson and Lomax put Hampton up 6-4.

Chavez was 2-for-2 with three runs scored, while Washington and Lyles were 2-for-3 with one RBI each.  Noelle Doan won her seventh decision of the year coming in relief with three innings and striking out three.

Game two saw Marshall use a seven-run second inning to take an early 9-0 lead.  Hampton put a run across in the third as Anderson reached on a single and took second on a throw.  She later scored on a single to right center by Emily Kepple.

In the third, Hampton called up the long ball again as Jeusi smacked a two-run home run to dead center field scoring Chavez who earlier doubled.
Mo'ne Davis was 2-for-2 in game two to lead the Lady Pirates at the plate, while Doan took her first loss of the year.

Hampton returns to action in day two of the Hampton Classic facing Fairleigh Dickinson at noon and Delaware State again at 2 pm.
