NEWARK, N.J. – Elliott Johnson, III and
Lonnie Jones scored two goals each for Hampton on Saturday as the lacrosse team fell 24-7 to New Jersey Institute of Technology in their season opener on Saturday.
Jones scored both of his goals in the final 1:49 of the first period, with his second coming off a
Miles Fawcett feed just before the clock went to zero. Johnson got his first goal to get Hampton on the board with 4:40 left from a feed by Derian Williams-Sturdivant, the first of two assists on the day.
Ian Groom put the Pirates on the board with 10:30 left in the third to stop a run of nine straight goals by the Highlanders. Williams-Sturdivant tallied his first goal of the year with 12:51 left to cut the lead to 22-5.Â
Andre Myers tallied a goal off a Williams-Sturdivant feed 80 seconds later, before Johnson got his second goal with 7:59 left to trail 23-7.
Hampton now visits Greenville, S.C. next Saturday for a noon start against Furman.
