HAMPTON, Va. – Sophomore Russell Dean scored a career high 18 points and dished out eight assists as Hampton dropped its home opener 75-58 to William & Mary on Wednesday night.
Dajour Dickens got Hampton off to a quick start with a layup and a dunk in the first 90 seconds for a 4-0 advantage. The Tribe started blistering the nets as they hit 8-of-11 (72.7%) from 3-point range to race out to a a 52-25 lead on a Luke Loewe 3-point play with 29 seconds left. A pair of Dean free throws closed the first half as Hampton trailed 52-27.
In the second half, Hampton forced 15 of William & Mary's 19 turnovers and held the Tribe to 38.1% from the field (8-of-21) and only 33.3% from 3-point range (2-of-6). A 12-4 run by the Pirates over a six-minute plus span pulled Hampton to 65-50 on a Dickens jumper with 5:53 left. Five straight points by the Tribe in the next 73 seconds pushed the lead back to 20 after a pair of Loewe free throws for a 70-50 margin.
BEHIND THE NUMBERS
Dean doubled his previous career high of nine points he did twice last year in both meetings with UNC Asheville. He has had seven or more assists in three of the first four games.
Dickens broke his collegiate career high with six blocked shots to go along with a near double-double of 11 points and nine rebounds. His previous blocked shot high was five against Middle Tennessee State on Feb. 9, 2019.
Marquis Godwin added 12 points and four rebounds to join Dean and Dickens in double figures.
The 10 blocked shots is a season high last done against Regent on November 21, 2019.
