HAMPTON, Va. – A 21-9 fourth quarter for the Hampton Lady Pirates helped propel them to a 73-55 win over Longwood University in a key Big South Conference contest on Tuesday night.
Nylah Young had a season best 30 points and 13 rebounds to lead three in double figures for Hampton.Â
Laren VanArsdale had 11 points and matched her career high with eight rebounds, while
MaKayla Timmons had 11 points and nine assists.
Senior
Ashley Bates had 10 points, 11 rebounds and four steals on the night as she broke the Division I career steals record for Hampton University with 291. Her total ranks third all-time in school history.
Longwood (9-10, 5-5) started the game strong scoring the first six points to lead 6-0 after a Kyla McMakin jumper at the 8:16 mark. Â Hampton (11-8, 7-3) responded with 15 of the next 18 points to take a 15-9 lead after a 3-ball from
Alyssa Sweeney with 2:03 left. A 3-pointer from just inside halfcourt at the buzzer by Bates gave Hampton a 20-14 lead after one.
Hampton pushed the lead to nine with 4:52 left as Young dropped a layup off a feed by Timmons to lead 31-22. Longwood stormed back and cut the lead to 35-34 after a McMakin layup with 54 seconds left.Â
The Lancers held the lead twice in the third quarter in the first 66 seconds as a jumper by Anne-Hamilton Leroy put them up 40-37 with 8:54 left. Hampton answered with a 12-1 run as a layup by Bates gave the hosts a 49-41 lead at the 2:45 mark of the third.
In the fourth, Hampton opened on a 12-2 run to take a 63-48 lead on a Young layup with 5:31 left. Longwood cut the lead to 67-55 on a layup by Dayna Rouse with 70 seconds left, but Hampton had a layup by VanArsdale, a layup and free throw by Young to give the final of 72-55.
Hampton outrebounded Longwood 48-39 and held a 21-9 advantage on the offensive boards. The Lady Pirates forced 28 Lancer turnovers.
Hampton now goes on the road to take on UNC Asheville on Saturday at 2 pm.
