RADFORD, Va. – Behind 21 points from Destinee Walker and three double-doubles, league leading Radford pulled away to defeat Hampton 84-59 on Wednesday night.
Hampton controlled the pace of the game in the opening quarter forcing eight Radford turnovers.Â
Mahaley Holit's jumper with 1:53 left capped off a Hampton spurt to take a 10-9 lead.
The Lady Pirates went scoreless over nearly a five-and-a-half-minute span as Radford pushed the lead to 23-16 on a Destinee Walker layup with 1:50 left. That advantage grew to as much as 10 points nearly a minute later as a Tina Lindenfield 3-ball put the hosts up 28-18 with 40 seconds left.
In the third, Hampton scored seven straight points to cut a 14-point deficit in half as
Kaylah Lupoe converted a three-point play and
Ashley Bates followed with a bucket and a pair of free throws to trail 41-34 with 5:15 left. That was as close as the deficit got in the second half.
Holit was the leading scorer for Hampton with 19 points, while Bates had 18 and three steals and
Laren VanArsdale chipped in with 13 points, six steals and five rebounds.
Radford held a commanding 59-25 advantage on the boards, as Sydney Nunley had 18, Lydia Rivers added 13 and Samantha Felgermacher had 11. Rivers added 16 points, while Nunley had 12 and Felgermacher chipped in with 10 to join Walker in double figures for Radford.
Hampton closes the regular season on Saturday hosting Winthrop at 4 pm on Senior Day.
