NEW WILMINGTON, PA. –
Pierce Johnson scored two goals with one assist, while Elliott Johnson, III added two goals as Hampton withstood a frantic final seven minutes from Westminster to score a 9-8 win on Wednesday night.
After giving up an early goal, Hampton scored three straight to close the first quarter as
Pierce Johnson evened the match with an unassisted goal at 10:17.Â
Josh Square gave Hampton a 2-1 lead off a feed from
Jonathan Napier with 3:07 left and Melvin Scott, III put the Pirates up 3-1 with an unassisted tally at the 1:44 mark.
The Pirates put all three goals of the second quarter in the span of just over 4:30 as Elliott Johnson, III scored the first two in the span of 41 seconds and Derian Williams-Sturdivant gave the guests a 6-1 lead with 7:17 left off a feed by
Pierce Johnson. Elliott Johnson took feeds from
Kendall Sapp and got the second goal from a feed by
Lonnie Jones. Hampton got the only tally of the third as
Nathan Brungot fed
Jonathan Napier with a pass at the 5:53 mark to take the lead to 7-1 entering the fourth.
The teams traded goals over the first eight minutes of the quarter as
Pierce Johnson got his second goal from a feed by Jones at 9:11 and Jones got on the board off a pass by Brungot to give Hampton a 9-3 advantage with just over seven minutes left.
Westminster took advantage of a few Hampton turnovers and scored the final five goals, four of those coming in the final 2:11 as Adrian Culp tallied an unassisted goal with just 15 seconds left to trim the deficit to 9-8.
Malcolm Flynn got the groundball off the final faceoff and was able to run out the clock as Hampton scored the 9-8 victory.
Hampton returns home for its final two home games of 2019 when they face VMI on March 30 at 2 pm.
