HAMPTON, Va. --
Ashley Bates had 23 points, seven rebounds and six steals to lead four in double figures as Hampton avenged an earlier loss to Campbell with a 61-50 win on Tuesday night in a key Big South Conference matchup.
After a first quarter that saw four ties and four lead changes with the team even at 14-all, the teams traded the lead three more times in the first six minutes as a pair of Holit free throws with 5:55 left to even the game at 20-all.
Those free throws started a 9-0 run for the hosts as a pair of Bates free throws with 67 seconds left gave Hampton a 28-20 lead. She went 1-for-2 with 18 seconds left at the line as Hampton held a 29-22 lead at intermission.
Hampton got the lead to 11 twice in the third quarter as a jumper by Holit gave them a 47-36 lead with 18 seconds left. A 3-ball from Shyanna Tuelle with eight seconds left put the Camels down 47-39 at the end of the third.
The guests trimmed the lead to three points on five occasions in the final quarter as a Taya Bolden jumper with 2:24 left got them to 53-50. Hampton closed the game on an 8-0 spurt as Holit went 1-for-2 from the line with 29 seconds left to seal the 61-50 win.
Hampton returns home to face Charleston Southern in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday at 4 pm. The men face High Point 30 minutes after the conclusion of the women's game.
