LADY PIRATES STOP SPIDERS 69-65 IN ANNE DONOVAN CLASSIC

NORFOLK, Va. – A 10-0 run over a four-minute span of the fourth quarter provided the working margin as Hampton defeated Richmond 69-65 in the final day of the Anne Donovan Classic on Saturday.

Hampton used an 8-2 run in the first to take a 10-4 lead with 1:52 left on a layup by Nylah Young.  Starting the second, Hampton upped the lead to 19-10 on a triple by MaKayla Timmons at the 6:41 mark.  Richmond went on a 12-2 run to take a 22-21 lead on a Claire Holt layup with 1:16 left.  Each team traded buckets to close the half with Richmond up 24-23.

In the third, Hampton used an 11-4 flurry to lead 46-39 with 92 seconds left on a putback by Dlayla Chakolis.  Richmond trimmed the lead to 52-51 at the 7:21 mark on a 3-pointer by Aniyah Carpenter, but Hampton answered with a 10-0 run to take a 62-51 advantage with 3:26 left on a Young layup.  

Ashley Bates was the leading scorer for Hampton pacing four in double figures with 17 points, while Young had a season-highs of 15 points and three steals to go with six rebounds.  Charlisa Jenkins, who was named to the All-Tournament team, had a double-double of 12 points and tied her career high with 13 rebounds.  Laren VanArsdale added 12 points, while Timmons had nine and five assists.

Hampton now hits the road to start Big South Conference action on December 28 facing Winthrop at 2 pm.
