WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – A 14-1 run over a seven-minute span of the second half proved to be the deciding factor as Hampton dropped a 78-65 decision at William & Mary on Friday night.
In a first half that saw each team take a couple runs, Hampton answered a 9-0 start by the Tribe with a 10-0 run to lead 19-17 on a
Ben Stanley jump hook with 10:28 left.Â
The hosts used an 11-3 spurt to lead 28-22 with 6:22 left, but Hampton followed with six straight points as Stanley slammed a
Jermaine Marrow pass in to tie the game at 28 with 3:55 remaining. William & Mary closed the first half on an 11-4 flurry to lead 39-32 at half on a Bryce Barnes three-pointer.
Hampton came out hot in the second half hitting five of its first seven shots to pull within 47-46 on a pair of
Edward Oliver-Hampton free throws with 15:20 remaining. Marrow had five and Oliver-Hampton had six to lead Hampton in the first five minutes.
From there, the Tribe went on its 14-1 run as an Andy Van Vilet bucket gave them a 61-47 lead with 8:40 left. The Tribe never trailed by less than 10 points the rest of the game.
Marrow topped all scorers with 30 points, while Stanley had a career-high 20 points and nine rebounds. Oliver-Hampton added 11 points, seven boards and four steals. Hampton returns home to face Regent on Thursday, Nov. 21 at 7 pm.
