BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Junior
Ashley Bates scored 15 points to lead three in double figures as Hampton lost 52-46 to Campbell in a defensive struggle on Saturday.
After trailing at the half 20-17, Hampton still was down three at the 7:50 mark of the third following a pair of Lauren Carter free throws for a 23-20 deficit. The Lady Pirates went on a 17-4 run over the next 5:41 to lead 37-27 after a free throw by
Charlisa Jenkins with 2:09 remaining.Â
In the fourth, Hampton held a 44-40 lead after a
Kaylah Lupoe layup with 5:35 left. From there, Hampton managed two points the rest of the way on a steal and layup by Bates with 2:06 left as Campbell closed the game on a 12-2 run to take the win.
Both teams struggled offensively as each team had one quarter hitting over 50% from the floor, but the rest of the game couldn't get over 33.3%. Hampton's was in the third when they scored 20 points hitting 50% from the field, while Campbell improved each quarter and hit 50% in the final 10 minutes.
Lupoe added 12 points, six rebounds and three blocked shots, while
Laren VanArsdale had 12 points, four rebounds and three steals for Hampton (8-8, 4-1).
No one was in double figures scoring for Campbell, but was benefitted by outscoring Hampton's bench 19-1. Hayley Barber topped the Camels with nine points.
Hampton now visits Rock Hill, SC to take on Winthrop on Tuesday night.
