BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Despite forcing overtime, an over eight-minute spell without a field goal proved to be too much to overcome as Hampton lost 87-74 to Gardner-Webb on Saturday night.
Hampton got a 10-point lead in the second half on two occasions, the last being on a
Trey Carver jumper with 12:59 left to lead 52-42. The hosts responded with an 18-3 run to lead 60-55 with a pair of Nate Johnson free throws with 7:48 left.
The Pirates went on an 8-0 spurt to take a 63-60 advantage on a 3-point play by
Ben Stanley with 6:27 left in regulation. A
Kalin Fisher jumper with 3:38 left kept Hampton up but that turned into the final field goal of the night for Hampton.Â
Two
Trevond Barnes free throws, his first points of the night, with 14 seconds left tied the game at 70 as Hampton withstood a pair of shot attempts by the Runnin Bulldogs which missed and went into overtime. The overtime saw Hampton go 0-for-6 with only four free throws as the hosts outscored them 17-4.
Fisher was the leading scorer for Hampton with 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead three in double figures.Â
