The Short Story: Reigning Big South Player of the Week
Megann Delgado was a dig away from a triple-double as Hampton University defeated Norfolk State University in four sets on Thursday night. She finished with 26 kills and 10 service aces to go with nine digs.
Â
BEHIND THE NUMBERS
- Delgado became the fourth Pirate in program history with double-digit service aces in a match. She matched totals set by Nicole Adams vs. The Citadel in 2001 and Brenda Gonzalez against S.C. State in 1998. She is the first to post double-digit aces since Stephanie Cisneros connected for 12 against Southern in 2003.
- Delgado hit an impressive .538 for the match, but was not the only Lady Pirate with impressive hitting numbers. Kyndall Nicholas and Lena Washington each had eight kills while hitting .353 and .300 respectively.
- Lena Reed-Petracek led Hampton with 32 assists while Maja Petronijevic provided 13 digs.
- Hampton topped NSU in kills (45-30), aces (20-11), and assists (42-23).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Hampton led the majority of the first set, but Norfolk State rallied twice to close moderate deficits, including a 3-0 run to pull within one, 22-21. Following an exchange of points to make it 23-22, HU received kills from Victoria Jenifer and Kyndall Nicholas to close out the set.
- Norfolk State rode a 7-0 lead in the second set to knot the match at a game apiece. HU rallied in the set, tying the contest at 15 and 16, but could not take a lead.
- NSU led 8-6 in the third set, but a 6-1 run put the Lady Pirates in front 12-9. Nicholas had two kills in that spurt while Delgado and Gabby Calloway added one each. The Spartans kept it within three, trailing 15-13, but a 5-0 HU run put the set out of reach at 20-13.
- The fourth set was all Hampton thanks to a 10-1 run in the middle of the game. Leading 9-6, HU posted its largest run of the match to go ahead 19-7 and finish off the Spartans. Petronijevic had two aces in the spurt while four different Lady Pirates contributed kills.Â
WHAT'S NEXT
Hampton will carry a three-matching winning streak into the Henson's Hawk Invite this weekend, hosted by Maryland Eastern Shore. The Lady Pirates will face South Carolina State on Friday at 4 p.m. before challenging St. Francis-Brooklyn and UMES on Saturday.
