The Short Story: Hampton received a balanced effort on Friday to win its fourth-straight match. The win streak is the longest for HU since winning six-straight from September 22 to October 6, 2017. Eight different Lady Pirates contributed kills with Kyndall Nicholas leading the way with 12 kills to go with four blocks.
Â
BEHIND THE NUMBERS
- Nicholas led the Pirates in kills for the first time this year. It is the second time she finished with double-digit kills, posting 13 in a win over New Orleans last weekend.
- Hampton hit .262 during the match, the highest mark for HU in a three-set match this season.
- The Lady Pirate defense was key to victory, holding South Carolina State to just 20 kills on 76 attempts at the net.
- With the victory, Hampton is 19-22 against South Carolina State, having won six-straight contests. SCSU last defeated Hampton in the 2010 season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The two squads were even early on as a kill by T'Meyah Burgess pulled SCSU square at three points apiece. Hampton responded with a 13-1 run to pull ahead 16-4. Nicholas had four kills and two blocks in that spurt.
- Hampton benefited from runs in the second set as well, especially a late burst that clinched the game. Trailing 20-19, three-straight SCSU errors put Hampton up 22-20. Following a South Carolina State block, HU posted three more points to cap off a 6-1 run and end the set. Megann Delgado had a kill and a block among the final three points.
- South Carolina State led early, 9-8, but HU responded to take the lead for good. The closest South Carolina State got from that point on in the third set was 11-10 when a block brought the guests within a point. Maja Petronijevic then served up five-straight points to put the Lady Pirates up 16-10. SCSU would get no closer the rest of the way.
WHAT'S NEXT
Hampton will look to extend its winning streak to five in the Henson's Hawk Invite on Saturday. The Lady Pirates will challenge St. Francis-Brooklyn at 1 p.m. and UMES at 7 p.m. to conclude tourney action.
