Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

SECOND QUARTER RUN LIFTS LACROSSE TO 15-5 WIN

HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University men's lacrosse team posted a 7-0 scoring run that spanned the duration of the second quarter and carried into the third to defeat Potomac State College 15-5 on Wednesday afternoon.

The 10-goal victory matches the largest margin of victory in program history as the Pirates defeated Bethany College by an identical 15-5 score on March 14. The five goals scored by the Catamounts also matches the fewest goals allowed in a game, set on three other occasions.

Derian Williams-Sturdivant started the scoring with an unassisted tally just over a minute in for his 13th goal of the season.

Potomac State evened the scoring at the 13:07 when Joshua Jahn found Dakota Stingo just outside the crease. Stingo carried the Catamounts, scoring his team's first four goals, and all but one on the day.

HU led 5-2 after the first quarter when a 7-0 run put the contest out of reach. Kendall Sapp started the spurt with his sixth goal of the season off a Josh Square assist at the 9:18 mark. Carter Boone followed four minutes later with an unassisted score. Sapp then found Michael Lawrence with 3:01 to go until half to make the score 8-2.

The Pirates capitalized on a key face-off win to score their ninth goal as Aaron Brown scooped the ball and scored just nine seconds later. Pierce Johnson connected with Preston Randolph 21 seconds after Brown's tally to make the score 10-2.

Johnson took advantage of a fatigued Catamount defensive line, finding the back of the cage with just three seconds left in the half. He capped off the run with a goal at the 12:57 mark of the third quarter.

Tyler Nisenfeld kept the Pirates from setting a new scoring record by making 20 saves while allowing just four goals after entering the contest in the second half.

The Hampton defense kept Potomac State from garnering many offensive chances, forcing the Catamounts into 19 failed clear attempts and 33 turnovers overall. Darren Almodiel caused five turnovers while scooping eight ground balls to lead the defense. Malcolm Flynn contributed three caused turnovers and seven ground balls of his own.

HU also held a massive advantage in ground balls, 55-17, while winning 14 of 22 face-off attempts.

Brown went 10-of-14 in the face-off circle while Robert Gresham III won three of his four attempts. Johnson (three goals, two assists) and Sapp (four goals, one assist) led the way offensively with five points each.

Paxtin Powell earned the win in goal with four saves in the first half. Kevin Mondy Jr. registered five stops in the second half.

Hampton (4-8) concludes the regular season on Saturday, April 28 with a 2 p.m. home match against Saint Thomas Aquinas College (5-7).
