Laren VanArsdale scored 23 points to lead three in double figures as Hampton rallied in the fourth quarter to defeat Samford 64-57 on Wednesday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Samford used a 9-0 run in the first quarter to take its largest lead of the game at 16-5 on a Natalie Armstrong triple with 90 seconds left.
- VanArsdale scored a layup and a pair of free throws to bring the Lady Pirates to 16-9 after the first quarter.
- Hampton clamped the defense in the second quarter holding Samford to 2-of-13 shooting with nine turnovers as they saw Vanarsdale score eight of the last 11 in the quarter with a layup at the buzzer putting Hampton up 23-21 at halftime.
- After Samford rallied for a lead heading into the fourth, a Mina Porte putback with 73 seconds left gave Hampton a 57-55 lead. After a layup by Armstrong with 58 seconds left, VanArsdale went 5-of-6 and Dior Dioum hit a pair of free throws in the final 52 seconds to ice the win.
BEHIND THE NUMBERS
- Porte had a breakout game with 14 points, seven rebounds and three steals to join Ashley Bates (16) and VanArsdale with double figures.
- Kaylah Lupoe swatted six shots as the Lady Pirates blocked nine on the night.
- Armstrong topped four in double figures for Samford with 17 points and nine rebounds with three blocked shots.
