IN BRIEF: Hampton cut a 13-point second half deficit to two, but couldn't get over the hump in falling to Loyola (MD) in the final game of the Legends Classic Detroit Subregional.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Hampton struggled hitting from the floor in the first half as they trailed 33-23 after hitting 25% from the floor.
- In the second half, Hampton fell behind as much as 13 points after a Chuck Champion jumper for a 48-35 Loyola lead with 14:19 left.
- The Pirates found a hint of rhythm going on an 18-7 run as Jermaine Marrow hit a layup off a feed from Akim Mitchell to get the Pirates to 55-53 with 6:55 left.
- Loyola answered with an 11-4 spurt to take a 66-57 lead on an Andrew Kostecka layup with four minutes left.  Hampton got a triple from Lysander Bracey and a pair of Ben Stanley free throws to trim the deficit to 66-62 with 2:55 left but that was as close as they got.
BEHIND THE NUMBERS
- Marrow was the leading scorer with 22 points and four assists, while Kalin Fisher added 13 and four steals and Stanley chipped in with 11 points.
- Trevond Barnes, Devon Oakley and Mitchell all shared leading rebounder honors with six as Hampton outrebounded Loyola 41-40.
