ORANGEBURG, SC. -- Senior
Monnazjea Finney-Smith scored 24 points to lead four in double figures, but the Hampton Lady Pirates saw their five-game winning streak snapped in a 78-70 loss to South Carolina State on Monday night.
The hosts hit 15-of-27 from the floor in the second half (55.6%) despite 17 of their 29 turnovers happening in the final 20 minutes. Bryeasha Blair scored 21 of her game-high 28 points in the second half to lead South Carolina State who snapped a 13-game losing skid to Hampton.
After forcing a 30-30 tie at half, Hampton trailed 76-63 with just under a minute left but a 3-pointer from Finney-Smith cut the lead to 76-66.Â
K'lynn Willis stole the ball and hit a layup to bring the margin to 76-68 with 43 seconds which was as close as Hampton could get.
Willis had 13 points and three steals, while
Ashley Bates just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds and
Dejane' James had 10 points and three assists.
Hampton returns home for a three-game homestand starting on Saturday when they host Florida A&M at 4 pm.
