HAMPTON, Va. -- Senior
Jephany Brown scored 20 points to lead three in double figures as Hampton made a few flurries in the second half but fell 64-58 to Quinnipiac in the Lady Pirates home opener on Sunday.
Quinnipiac (4-3) held a 52-41 lead 14 seconds into the final quarter on a triple by Aryn McClure, but
Monnazjea Finney-Smith answered at the 9:27 mark to trim the lead to 52-44. A triple from Carly Fabbri pushed the Bobcats lead back to 10 with 7:44 left at 55-45. Hampton went on a 13-4 run to trim the lead to 59-58 on a Finney-Smith free throw with 2:25 left.
That turned into the final points for Hampton as Fabbri hit a layup, a pair of foul shots from McClure and one from Edel Thornton iced the game for Quinnipiac.
Finney-Smith had 12 points, six rebounds and four steals, while Allina Starr added 10 points and six rebounds. Hampton was 22-of-54 from the floor (40.7%), 4-of-17 from 3-point range (23.5%) and 10-of-17 from the foul line (58.8%). Â
Quinnipiac was paced by Fabbri with 15, McClure with 14 and Paula Strautmane with 12. The Bobcats were 25-of-53 from the floor (47.2%) and 12-22 in the second half (54.5%). They outrebounded Hampton 34-33.
Hampton is next in action on December 7 in Philadelphia against Temple University.
