HAMPTON, Va. – A blistering second half from the field helped the Hampton men's basketball team overcome a two-point halftime deficit and defeat Bluefield College 85-68 on Sunday evening.
Bluefield (1-1) took a two-point lead on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from Ty'quon Reid to end the half with a 35-33 halftime advantage.
Hampton (1-1) opened the second half on a 13-4 run as a dunk from
Akim Mitchell gave the Pirates a 46-39 lead. They got the lead into double figures on a 3-point play by
Jermaine Marrow with 7:29 left at 64-54 and kept the Rams at bay the rest of the game.
In the second half, Hampton hit 18-of-29 from the floor (62.1%) to finish at 52.6% for the game (30-of-57) and were 23-of-26 from the foul line on the night (88.5%).
Marrow and Mitchell were the leading scorers with 18 points each as Hampton had five in double figures.
AJ Astroth added 16 points and six rebounds, while
Greg Heckstall had a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds and
Kalin Fisher chipped in with 11 points as well.
Hampton returns to action on Wednesday night in Williamsburg facing the Tribe of William & Mary.
