OFFENSE STRUGGLES IN HOME LOSS TO DREXEL

HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University women's basketball team had a hard time scoring points on Saturday afternoon at the HU Convocation Center, falling 57-36 to Drexel.

The Lady Pirates fell to 0-7 on the season.

Malia Tate-DeFreitas led the Lady Pirates with 12 points, continuing her streak of scoring in double figures in every game so far this season despite shooting 4-for-15 from the floor. Kaylah Lupoe added eight points, while tying her career high with 13 rebounds.

Ryan Jordan added 10 boards, and K'lynn Willis scored seven points.

The Lady Pirates shot just 24.5 percent (12-for-49) from the floor – including a 19.1 percent clip (4-for-21) in the first half. Hampton went 4-for-19 (21.1 percent) from behind the arc and made eight of its 11 free throws (72.7 percent).

Hampton out-rebounded Drexel 42-34.

Drexel jumped out to a 19-6 lead after the first quarter, but the Lady Pirates clamped down on defense in the second 10-minute frame. Hampton held the Dragons without a field goal for the entire quarter, only allowing a pair of free throws in the final two minutes.

But over that same span, the Lady Pirates only scored five points – a trey from Tate-DeFreitas and a layup from Lupoe – and Drexel still held a 21-11 lead at the half.

Jessica Pellechio led all scorers with 10 points at the half.

Once the third quarter started, Drexel took control. Rachel Pearson hit three 3-pointers as part of a 13-0 run for the Dragons, and by the time Sarah Curran hit a layup with 5:48 left in the quarter, Drexel held a 34-11 lead.

Lupoe hit two free throws with 2:34 left in the quarter, cutting the lead to 38-17, but Drexel answered with five straight points, going up 43-17 at the 1:38 mark after Carrie Alexander converted a 3-point play.

Drexel's largest lead came with 8:16 left in the fourth quarter, 52-24 after a Curran trey.

The Dragons (3-4) shot 32.1 percent (17-for-53) from the floor, hitting nine of their 27 3-pointers (33.3 percent). Drexel also made 14 of its 18 free throws, while turning 21 Hampton turnovers into 17 points.

Pearson led the Dragons with 16 points, hitting four 3-pointers.
