BALTIMORE, Md. – For the second straight game, the Hampton University men's basketball team came back from a second-half deficit to force overtime. This time, the Pirates only needed one OT session before defeating Coppin State 74-71 on Saturday at the Physical Education Complex.
The Pirates improved to 4-3 overall and went to 1-0 in MEAC play.
Reginald Johnson, Jr. led three Pirates in double figures with 22 points, going 8-for-18 from the floor, while
Quinton Chievous added 21 points and 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the season, going 8-for-12 from the floor.
Chievous has recorded double-digit rebounds in each of the four games he's played so far this season.
Kalin Fisher added a season-high 13 points, and
Dionte Adams grabbed a career-high tying 11 rebounds.
The Pirates shot 41.3 percent (26-for-63) from the floor – including a 54.2 percent (13-for-24) clip in the second half. Hampton also went 20-for-31 from the free throw line, including 10-for-11 from the charity stripe in the second half.
Hampton also held a 49-43 edge on the glass.
The Pirates went just 1-for-4 from the floor in the overtime, but also went 4-for-7 from the free throw line.
With 7:40 remaining in regulation, Josh Treadwell sank a layup that gave Coppin State a 60-52 lead, before the Pirates scored six of the next seven points – cutting the lead to 61-58 after Chievous sank a layup with 5:56 remaining.
Another Chievous layup with 2:08 left in the second half tied the game at 64-64, before Coppin State got a 3-point play from Keith Shivers to take a 67-64 lead with 1:12 left.
Johnson hit a layup with 59 seconds left, before Adams hit a free throw with 14 seconds left to force overtime.
Coppin State scored the first two baskets of the overtime session – taking a 71-67 lead with 3:28 left in the frame after Treadwell sank a jumper. But those were the Eagles' only field goals of the overtime, and Fisher gave the Pirates the lead after hitting two free throws and hitting a trey with 2:26 left.
That bucket put the Pirates up 72-71, before Chievous and Fisher each hit a free throw down the stretch.
The Eagles controlled much of the game, including the first half. At one point, Coppin State held a double-digit lead over the Pirates – going up 24-14 with 8:44 left in the frame after a layup from Lucian Brownlee. Treadwell added a trey at the 6:55 mark to put Coppin State up 27-17.
Johnson sank a layup as the clock ran out to cut the Eagles' lead to 35-31 at the half.
Johnson had 13 points after the first 20 minutes.
Coppin State (2-5, 0-1 MEAC) shot 35.6 percent (26-for-73) from the floor and made just four of 19 3-pointers. The Eagles also hit 15 of their 20 free throws.
Treadwell led Coppin State with 22 points.
