HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University women's basketball team will kick off a two-game homestand to close the regular season on Saturday, squaring off against Norfolk State at 4 p.m. in the HU Convocation Center.
The Lady Pirates (23-4, 14-0 MEAC) picked up their 13th straight win on Monday, defeating Maryland Eastern Shore 90-62 in Princess Anne, Md. It was Hampton's fifth 90-point effort of the season, and if the Lady Pirates win on Saturday, they'll wrap up their fourth straight MEAC regular-season title – and the No. 1 seed in the MEAC Tournament on March 10-15.
Freshman guard
Malia Tate-DeFreitas (Harrisburg, Pa.) led the way with 26 points, recording her 10th 20-point effort this season. Senior forward
Alyssa Bennett (Hampton, Va.) recorded her 11th double-double of the season with 21 points and a team-high 11 rebounds.
Junior guard
Kenia Cole (Silver Spring, Md.) added 18 points.
The Spartans (11-13, 7-6 MEAC) were picked to finish 11th in the MEAC this season, and Norfolk State is coming off a 79-74 win at Howard on Monday. Redshirt-junior guard Rae Corbo leads the Spartans in scoring, averaging 13.1 points per game, while senior forward Rachel Gordon is averaging 12.0 points and a MEAC-best 12.4 rebounds per game.
The Lady Pirates are 53-31 all-time against Norfolk State, and Hampton has won the last 16 meetings — including a 93-59 win in Echols Hall earlier this month. Norfolk State last beat the Lady Pirates on Dec. 2, 2006; head coach
David Six has never lost to the Spartans.
The Lady Pirates are 22-12 all-time at home against Norfolk State.
Hampton is 308-138 against teams currently in the MEAC — including a 53-31 mark against Norfolk State — and the Lady Pirates have won six MEAC regular-season titles to go along with seven tournament titles, including each of the last four.
Overall, the Lady Pirates have won their last 44 games against MEAC foes, including conference tournament games.
The Lady Pirates were a perfect 11-0 at home last season, and in their four-plus years under Six, they are 47-7 in the HU Convocation Center. Hampton had not lost at home since Jan. 28, 2012, falling to Coppin State in overtime, prior to a loss to American back on Dec. 4.
Hampton is 10-1 at home this season after defeating UMES 54-35 on Feb. 10, and the Lady Pirates have won their last 17 home MEAC games.
