NORFOLK, Va. – The Hampton University women's basketball team will kick off a string of three straight road games on Saturday, as the Lady Pirates square off against Norfolk State in Echols Hall at 4 p.m.
The Lady Pirates (20-4, 11-0 MEAC) have won 10 straight games after Monday's 54-35 win over Maryland Eastern Shore – and they recorded their fifth straight 20-win season in the process. Senior guard
Nicole Hamilton (Hampton, Va.) led the way with 25 points (18 in the second half).
She was the only Lady Pirate in double figures that night.
The Spartans (10-11, 6-4 MEAC) were picked to finish 11th in the MEAC this season, and Norfolk State, in its fifth season under head coach (and former Lady Pirate) Debra Clark, is coming off a 77-63 loss to Howard on Monday.
Redshirt-junior guard Rae Corbo leads the Spartans in scoring, averaging 13.7 points per game, while senior forward Rachel Gordon is averaging 11.9 points and a MEAC-best 12.5 rebounds per game.
The Lady Pirates are 52-31 all-time against Norfolk State, and Hampton has won the last 15 meetings — including a season sweep in 2013. Norfolk State last beat the Lady Pirates on Dec. 2, 2006; head coach
David Six has never lost to the Spartans.
The Lady Pirates are 22-15 all-time on the road against Norfolk State.
Hampton is 305-138 against teams currently in the MEAC — including a 51-32 mark against Norfolk State — and the Lady Pirates have won six MEAC regular-season titles to go along with seven tournament titles, including each of the last four.
Overall, the Lady Pirates have won their last 41 games against MEAC foes, including conference tournament games.
The Lady Pirates were 13-2 on the road last season, with their only road defeats being at Duke in the NCAA Tournament and at Virginia Tech. Under Six, the Lady Pirates are 50-18 in road games over the past four-plus seasons. So far this season, the Lady Pirates are 7-3 in true road games after a 90-46 win at Morgan State on Feb. 3.
Hampton has won its last 25 road conference games.
