HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Hampton University women's basketball team suffered through a cold shooting day on Saturday afternoon at the JMU Convocation Center, as James Madison took the 85-53 win.
The Lady Pirates fell to 3-7 on the season.
Sophomore guard
Malia Tate-DeFreitas (Harrisburg, Pa.) led the Lady Pirates with 20 points – hitting three 3-pointers and going 7-for-10 from the free throw line, while also grabbing a team-high four steals. Senior guard
Kyani White (Manassas, Va.) added 10 points and three assists.
Redshirt junior forward
Tyler Hobgood (Oxford, N.C.) grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
The Lady Pirates shot 26.6 percent (17-for-64) from the floor and made four of their 18 3-pointers (22.2 percent). Hampton was also 15-for-27 (55.6 percent) from the free throw line.
A 3-pointer from Tate-DeFreitas with 17:18 left in the first half tied the game at 5-5, before the Dukes went on a 20-2 run to take a 25-7 lead at the 8:53 mark after a trey from Ashley Perez.
A trey from Precious Hall at the 5:17 mark put JMU up 36-13, and the Dukes took their largest lead of the half with 1:13 left, when Toia Giggetts hit two free throws to give JMU a 44-18 lead.
The Duke, who led 44-21 at the break, shot 51.9 percent (14-for-27) from the floor in the first half and hit seven of 11 3-pointers.
The Lady Pirates opened the second half by scoring nine of the first 13 points, cutting the Dukes' lead to 48-30 with 14:48 left to play after a free throw from junior guard
Blake Jenkines (Clarksville, Tenn.). JMU answered with a 9-3 spurt to take a 57-33 lead.

Ryan Jordan (Manassas, Va.) cut JMU's lead to 63-45 with 8:26 left, before the Dukes went on a 15-5 run, taking a 78-50 lead with 2:57 left after Lauren Okafor converted a 3-point play.
JMU (9-1) shot 48.2 percent (27-for-56) from the floor and hit seven of 15 3-pointers (46.7 percent). The Dukes also held a 48-45 edge on the glass.
Hall led four Dukes in double figures with 30 points.
