LADY PIRATES FALL TO KANSAS STATE ON THE ROAD

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Hampton University women's basketball team wrapped up its three-game, season-opening road trip Friday night with a 66-46 loss to Kansas State at Bramlage Coliseum.
 
The Lady Pirates fell to 0-3 on the season.
 
Sophomore guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas (Harrisburg, Pa.) recorded her third straight 20-point effort to open the season, leading the Lady Pirates with 20 points. Senior guard Jackie Marshall (Hackensack, N.J.) came off the bench to add 11 points behind three 3-pointers.
 
Tate-DeFreitas and junior guard Areana Davis (Virginia Beach, Va.) each grabbed a team-high five rebounds.
 
The Lady Pirates shot 25.9 percent (15-for-58) from the floor and hit nine of 31 3-pointers (29.0 percent). Hampton also went 7-for-10 (70.0 percent) from the free throw line.
 
A 3-pointer from Tate-DeFreitas at the 17:49 mark of the first half cut Kansas State's lead to 6-5, before the Wildcats scored the next 15 points to take a 21-5 lead with 8:39 left in the half following a 3-pointer from Shaelyn Martin.
 
Tate-DeFreitas ended the run at the 8:23 mark with a trey, cutting the lead to 21-8.
 
A layup from Erica Young with 3:42 left in the half gave Kansas State its largest lead of the opening 20 minutes at 27-12, before senior guard Kenia Cole (Silver Spring, Md.) hit back-to-back treys to cut the lead to 27-18 at the 2:57 mark.
 
Kansas State held a 32-20 lead at the half.
 
Kansas State opened the second half on a 17-4 run to take a 49-24 lead at the 13:49 mark, before the Lady Pirates scored the next four points to cut the lead to 49-28 with 12:27 to play after a trey from Tate-DeFreitas.
 
The Wildcats jumped back out to a 53-28 lead, before back-to-back 3-pointers from Marshall cut the lead to 53-34 with 8:20 left to play. A free throw from senior guard Lauren Johnson (Cairo, Ga.) with 4:28 left cut the lead to 59-41.
 
Tate-DeFreitas hit a jumper at the 2:20 mark to cut Kansas State's lead to 62-43.
 
Kansas State (3-0) shot 41.3 percent (26-for-63) from the floor and went 10-for-27 (37.0 percent) from behind the arc. The Wildcats also held a 50-32 edge on the glass.
 
Breanna Lewis led Kansas State with 13 points, while Haley Texada added 11.
