LADY PIRATES TAKING STREAKS TO COPPIN STATE

BALTIMORE, Md. –
The Hampton University women's basketball team, winners of six straight games, will take on Coppin State on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Physical Education Complex.
 
The Lady Pirates (16-4, 7-0 MEAC) defeated South Carolina State 78-47 on Monday for their 37th straight win over a conference foe, as well as their 23rd straight road conference win. Freshman guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas (Harrisburg, Pa.) led the way with 27 points, while senior forward Alyssa Bennett (Hampton, Va.) added 17 points.
 
Senior guard Nicole Hamilton (Hampton, Va.) added 10 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, and five blocks. Redshirt-sophomore forward Brielle Ward (Baltimore, Md.) grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds and added eight points.
 
Hamilton is six points shy of 1,000 for her career.
 
The Lady Eagles (9-10, 6-1 MEAC) were picked to finish third in the MEAC this season, receiving a first place vote. Coppin State is in its 15th season under head coach Derek Brown, and the team has won three straight games after beating North Carolina A&T 59-50 on Monday. Senior forward Kyra Coleman leads three players in double figures, averaging 14.5 points per game.
 
The Lady Pirates are 22-15 all-time against Coppin State, and Hampton has won the last five meetings — including an 80-52 win in Hampton, Va. earlier this season. Coppin State was the last MEAC team to hand the Lady Pirates a loss — a 69-66 overtime decision in Hampton, Va. in 2011-12.
 
Hampton is 7-7 against Coppin State on the road.
 
Hampton is 302-138 against teams currently in the MEAC — including a 22-15 mark against Coppin State — and the Lady Pirates have won six MEAC regular-season titles to go along with seven tournament titles, including each of the last four.
 
The Lady Pirates were 13-2 on the road last season, with their only road defeats being at Duke in the NCAA Tournament and at Virginia Tech. Under head coach David Six, the Lady Pirates are 48-18 in road games over the past four-plus seasons.
 
So far this season, the Lady Pirates are 5-3 in true road games.
