SOFTBALL GEARING UP FOR DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST CAMPBELL

HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University softball team will break from its conference schedule on Thursday, as the Lady Pirates take on Campbell in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. at the Lady Pirates Softball Stadium.

Hampton is 5-2 at home this season.

The Lady Pirates (24-21) have won six straight games and 13 of their last 16 after sweeping a three-game series against Maryland Eastern Shore this past weekend. Hampton is currently second in the MEAC Northern Division with an 11-1 mark in conference play.

Campbell (35-16) has won nine straight games after sweeping a doubleheader at UNC Wilmington on Tuesday.

Freshman Taylor McCoy (Riverview, Fla.), the reigning MEAC Rookie of the Week, leads the team with a .412 batting average, recording a team-high 56 hits in 136 at-bats. She also has a team-high 13 doubles this season and has driven in a team-high 32 runs.

McCoy is third in the MEAC in hitting among players who've played in at least 30 games, and she is second in the MEAC in hits, third in doubles, and fourth in RBIs.

Junior Margaret Wilkins (Tustin, Calif.) has scored a team-high 39 runs and hit a team-high six home runs. She is batting .351 so far this season, slugging .552. In all, five Lady Pirates are hitting .300 or better, as the Lady Pirates are hitting .294 as a team, ranking fourth in the MEAC.

Wilkins is third in the MEAC in runs scored.

Freshman Diamond Ponds (Riverside, Calif.) has 18 stolen bases in 24 attempts, fifth in the MEAC.

Sophomore Jailynn Jackson (Virginia Beach, Va.) is 18-9 on the mound so far this season, boasting a 2.92 ERA (third in the MEAC among pitchers with at least 20 appearances) and a MEAC-best 173 strikeouts in 175.0 innings pitched.

Jackson has recorded at least five strikeouts in 21 of her last 29 appearances.

Hampton is 0-8 all-time against Campbell after losing both games of a doubleheader in Buies Creek, N.C. last season 11-2 and 8-0. The Lady Pirates have faced Campbell in each of the last three seasons.
